No Charges in Dog Mauling Deaths

The man who fed a pack of feral dogs on his property will not be charged in the mauling deaths of an Oglethorpe County couple earlier this month. According to authorities, Howard Thaxton was not the owner of the 16 dogs that he fed every other day and will not be charged in connection with the deaths of Sherry Schweder, 65, and Lothar Karl Schweder, 77, earlier this month. The former university professor and his wife were attacked and killed by the pack of dogs while out for a stroll near their home in Lexington. Although these were feral dogs, even the most well-trained animals can attack without warning.

As is evident in this tragedy, dog bite injuries can be severe and are often fatal. Dog attack victims often sustain puncture wounds and lacerations to the face, neck, and arms, which may require repeated cosmetic surgery procedures such as skin grafts and microsurgurgical repair. In addition, dog bite injury victims must undergo scar-removal techniques, such as dermabrasion, which require multiple treatments to be effective. Dog attack victims may suffer total or partial loss of limb function and extensive nerve damage. And the most vicious dog attacks result in death.
