Icy Roads Pose Hazards to GA Drivers

Icy conditions are posing serious hazards to drivers on Georgia's roads, according to various news reports. One Bartow County deputy was injured in a crash involving a tractor trailer on Friday. He was treated at Cartersville Medical Center and later released. In another incident, two Cobb County deputies were uninjured when their vehicle spun out of control and landed in a marsh. Georgia state patrol officers cited slick, icy roads as a factor in both crashes.

Low visibility and icy roads create hazards to drivers in the winter months. To avoid accidents in inclement weather, motorists should employ the following precautions:

  • Because it takes more space to stop a vehicle on icy roads, drivers should leave extra room between their car and the vehicle in front of them.
  • Motorists should drive with their headlights on at all times to increase their vehicle’s visibility to other drivers on the road.
  • Drivers should slow down when crossing bridges or overpasses, as these areas will be icy even when other areas of the road are not.
  • Motorists should clear snow and ice from their windshield, back window, driver and passenger windows, as well as their headlights and tail lights before operating their vehicle.
